La Jolla is a quick 36 minutes from Carlsbad. Originally conceived as a protected swimming area for children, the sea-walled cove began to fill with sand and eventually, sea lions and harbor seals. There is still ongoing debate over who is more entitled to this spot, children or the seals, but it does not diminish its appeal to tourists and locals. Despite the controversy and crowds, the area can be surprisingly peaceful and serene. It’s a great place to take a photo. Walk along the seawall for gorgeous 360 degree views of La Jolla and the Pacific ocean.

Expert tip! Head down a block south when finished looking at the seals over to Cuvier Park (MAP LINK). We had a picnic there and feed the squirrels and pigeons. I have never seen so many in one place. The kids probably enjoyed looking at those more than the seals to tell your the truth. But either way tons of fun!
